A Primer on Toric Contact Lenses
A toric contact lens is a lens that has either or both of the optical surfaces giving the patient the effect of a cylindrical lens. This is typically used in combination with the effect of a more commonly used spherical lens. Nearsighted and Farsighted individuals who also suffer from astigmatism and have not been able to wear regular contact lenses may also benefit from using toric contact lenses.
If, for instance, one eye is afflicted by astigmatism and the other is not, the patient may be counseled to use a spherical lens in one eye and a toric style lens in the other. Toric lenses are manufactured from the same materials as regular contacts but have several distinct differences from normal lenses:
Toric lenses correct both spherical and cylindrical aberrations.
Toric lenses, depending on the patient’s condition, may have a specific top and bottom. This is due to the asymmetrical nature of toric lenses.
Toric lenses are generally more expensive to produce than regular contact lenses.
